Growing up in Pennsylvania, the only things I knew about Michigan were the images and stories about Detroit. Not the most positive perspective. So when during our early courting days, Betsy suggested we take a trip to one of her favorite places… that was my question -why?
But she was very insistent with “love me, love my lake”, so off we went. I can remember being stunned by the contrast between my expectations and the reality. The clear air, rolling, green hills, and that Caribbean-like water was surprising and a welcome relief from what I imagined.
At that time, Betsy’s mom was renting a cottage for the summer from the Vandernoot’s on Little Glen. The cottage was small and since we were not yet married, I would have to find other accommodations for the week. Fortunately, I came prepared with camping gear and found a spot in the DH day Campground. I recall with chills my first splash into Lake Michigan. It could not have lasted more than 15 seconds. That will wake you up! One of my winning moments with Betsy’s mom, Ann, was hosting a campfire meal consisting of hotdogs and s’mores – a Glen Lake staple. I was hooked, fortunately, Mrs. Botsford liked me, Don Vandernoot saved my back with a cot…and a new tradition began!
